"For 40 years, I have been actively involved in international workers' solidarity especially through maintaining close ties with Thai workers. As a member of the UnionAID Action Committee, I work on a project supporting 22 unions near Bangkok. Volunteering has greatly enriched my life through sharing the lives and experiences of others. ”
John has been interested and active in international workers’ solidarity since his first visit to Thailand over 40 years ago and has maintained continuous contact with Thai workers since then. At the time, 1982, he was working in an ice cream factory in Wellington and president of the NZ Ice Cream Workers Union. John now works at the Postal Workers Union, and continues to volunteer with UnionAID.
As a member of the UnionAID Action Committee, John supports the UnionAID project working with 22 unions in the Rangsit Labour Union Goup (RLUG) based in Rangsit City, Pathum Thanee province, just north of Bangkok. He has been learning Thai language to be able speak in Thai at meetings of the RLUG unions when he visits Thailand.
