A supportive political environment suggests it is good timing for a new UnionAID project in Malaysia to build union membership and strength for forestry workers. Designed and managed by the Building and Woodworkers International (BWI), there will be a strategic focus on training organisers, developing leaders and revitalising youth. BWI staff will engage with three public sector unions offering educational workshops and seminars, and a national conference on climate justice and sustainability.
Even with the election of a progressive government in 2022 and Malaysia assuming the ASEAN chairmanship, however, it may not be easy. Existing legacy legislation impedes union formation and collective bargaining. A culture of passivity and widespread ‘free-riding’ has been fostered, where workers benefit from union-negotiated improvements without joining or actively participating. Over time, this has undermined the collective strength necessary to drive meaningful workplace and policy reform. This project will aim to address these long standing issues and attract new members.
