Today, workers across Aotearoa New Zealand are coming together in a nationwide hui organised by the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) to push back against the government’s ongoing attacks on workers’ rights. As Aotearoa’s workers raise their voices, UnionAID’s international partners have sent powerful messages of solidarity, highlighting the global nature of the struggle for workers’ rights.
The current coalition government has implemented a series of policies that have raised alarm among workers and unions. These include the abolition of fair pay agreements, reintroduction of 90-day trials, mass public sector layoffs, and cuts to minimum wage increases. The government has also scaled back work on pay equity claims, reduced funding for essential services, and undermined Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori rights.
As workers gather today in Aotearoa to send a strong message to those in power, they do so knowing they have the support of their international whānau in the global labour movement.

From India the Tamil Nadu Labour Union said:
“To all workers standing together in New Zealand. In these challenging times, your courage and determination to fight for your rights are inspiring. External Forces may try to divide us, but united we are stronger. Let us raise our voices together and demand fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for our rights.
Your fight is not just for yourselves, but for future generations of workers. Every step you take toward justice is a step toward a better, more equitable society. Solidarity is our strength—when we stand together, we can create meaningful change.
Keep fighting, keep standing tall, and know that you are not alone. We are all in this together!”
