Even under military rule, workers in Myanmar are continuing to organise

A UnionAID-supported project with the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar has already brought 294 new members into the union movement — 150 education workers and another 144 public service workers, including doctors, nurses, midwives and municipal workers.

Training in organising, workers’ rights, health and safety and women’s rights attracted more than 500 aspiring union activists, including many women and young workers.

When military operations and air strikes made face-to-face training unsafe, the programme shifted location and moved online.

The result is a new generation of workers, gaining the knowledge, confidence and organisation they will need to help build a democratic Myanmar.
