Empowering Youth Leaders in Myanmar 2024-25

The challenge

Following the 2021 military coup, Myanmar’s education and governance systems have been severely disrupted, particularly in ethnic territories. Many youth have been forced to migrate or enter early marriages due to a lack of opportunities. This has created a critical need for leadership development to empower young people to contribute to their communities and, after the junta collapses, support the transition towards a federal democratic state.

Objectives

  • Train 13 youths through a 10-month leadership programme, including a 3-month internship with local government departments.
  • Equip participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake leadership roles in their communities for a minimum of three years.
  • Build community cohesion through school activities, parenting education and encouraging parents’ involvement, and engaging with volunteers from the wider community.

Why this matters

Raising civilian leaders is essential for the future of democracy and state-building in Myanmar. Already parallel governing systems have been established in self-administered ethnic areas. But they now need people with the expertise to fill positions and build good governance. This project prepares young people to take up these roles and establish effective processes of governance that are supported and trusted by their communities.

What the project is doing

The project includes:

  • A 7-month theoretical programme covering subjects such as politics, gender equality, federalism, and civic education.
  • A 3-month internship with local government departments to provide hands-on experience.
  • Monthly community engagement activities where participants share knowledge and lead discussions on local issues.

Outcomes

Upon completion, participants will be equipped to:

  • Advocate for community issues such as corruption, safety, and education.
  • Contribute to the transition towards a federal democratic state at the local level.
  • Serve as leaders in their communities, building on the success of the 2023 cohort, who are now working in local government departments and community roles.
