Collective values key to social change – Hon Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban

At this year’s Peter Conway Memorial Lecture, Hon Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban explored how Pacific cultural values can strengthen modern leadership and social justice work. Speaking last night at Victoria University in Wellington, she shared lessons from her journey from community organiser to parliamentarian, emphasising the importance of collective action and mutual support.

You can watch a recording of the lecture below.

Dame Winnie highlighted how Pacific approaches to leadership – grounded in respect, relationships and service to community – remain relevant for today’s challenges. She spoke about the need to create more inclusive spaces for diverse voices, particularly young Pacific leaders, while acknowledging the ongoing influence of mentors like her mother, who taught her “don’t be afraid – only rats are afraid.“

The annual lecture honours the memory of Peter Conway – union leader, internationalist and foundation Trustee of UnionAID, economist, musician. And our friend, colleague and comrade.
