The Workers Union of Solomon Islands (WUSI) is strengthening its organising efforts to protect private sector workers’ rights across the Solomon Islands’ diverse island communities.
The challenge
As the only private sector union in the Solomon Islands, WUSI faces unique challenges in organising workers across multiple islands. Geographic isolation, high transport costs, and economic instability make it difficult to maintain consistent union presence. Recent global events have further impacted union activities and membership.
Building worker power
This strategic organising project focuses on:
- Consolidating and expanding union membership
- Strengthening women’s leadership
- Supporting workplace committees
- Negotiating collective agreements
- Improving working conditions in key industries
- Building worker education and awareness
Why this matters
With 6,000 members across several provinces, WUSI represents workers in vital industries including ports, construction, plantations, and tuna processing. Strong union organisation is essential for protecting workers’ rights and improving conditions through collective bargaining.
The project
WUSI will:
- Launch targeted recruitment campaigns
- Conduct worker education programmes
- Support collective bargaining negotiations
- Develop women leaders
- Build active workplace committees
- Strengthen union presence across provinces
Working with experienced organisers and labour officials, WUSI will focus on strategic worksites to build sustainable union power and improve conditions for Solomon Islands workers.
