The Challenge
Since the 2021 military coup, workers’ rights in Myanmar have been severely violated. Trade unions face suppression, and workers are forced into exploitative conditions or forced to flee as undocumented migrants. The current dictatorship has dismantled workers’ ability to form unions, make collective demands, or engage in union activities. Millions of workers are subjected to slavery-like conditions, while others are conscripted into forced labour. In this context, there is an urgent need to strengthen the trade union movement and build the capacity of union leaders and members to advocate for their rights and improve working conditions.
Objectives
The primary goal of this project is to build the strength of CTUM through capacity building of its members. To achieve this, the project will:
- Develop curricula for trade union (TU) training and Training of Trainers (ToT) courses.
- Form a training team to deliver TU training to 500 members.
- Ensure 500 CTUM members complete TU training and demonstrate understanding of course material.
- Train 15 educators through the ToT course, enabling them to share their knowledge with other workers.
Why This Matters
Workers in Myanmar are facing unprecedented challenges. The suppression of trade unions and the deterioration of working conditions have left millions of workers vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. By strengthening the capacity of union members and leaders, this project empowers workers to advocate for their rights and contribute to the development of fair labour policies under a future democratic system. This is not just about improving individual lives—it’s about building a stronger, more just society where workers’ rights are respected and protected.
Outcomes
- A set of curricula is developed for TU training and ToT courses.
- A training team is formed and demonstrates expertise in delivering TU training.
- 500 CTUM members complete TU training and gain a deeper understanding of workers’ rights and unionism.
- 15 educators complete the ToT course and are equipped to train and empower other workers.
- Trained members share their knowledge with fellow workers, strengthening the broader trade union movement.
This project is a critical step toward building a fairer and more just labour system in Myanmar. By supporting CTUM’s efforts, you can help empower workers to fight for their rights and improve their lives.
