Building a healthcare workforce in a conflict zone

An ambitious new UnionAID healthcare project is underway in Myanmar, funded by the New Zealand Nurses Organisation – NZNO and managed by one of our Myanmar young leaders. Since the military coup in 2021, hundreds of nurses and doctors have refused to work under the military junta and joined the Civil Disobedience Movement to contribute as volunteers.

This has created an opportunity to rebuild the health system through a network of health services across Karenni state, supported by professional training for nurses, midwives, doctors and paramedics. Curricula will be developed, drawing on collaborations with health providers from the Myanmar diaspora and other local and international experts.

Small local hospitals (such as the one shown below) will enable practitioners to hone their practical skills under the supervision of experienced doctors and nurses, building a world class workforce for the area and the future of Myanmar.
