The Workers Union of Solomon Islands (WUSI) has made significant achievements with increases in wages, salaries and allowances for forestry workers, under our latest UnionAID funded partnership project.
One aim of the project was to build union membership and build the participation of women workers. Over the year membership has grown by 204 – including 65 women – as a result of education and union awareness trainings and eleven women have taken an active role in union negotiations.
WUSI covers private sector workers who are widespread both industrially and geographically across several islands. Although the distance presents significant challenges for WUSI organisers, they have taken up issues for workers from palm oil plantations, construction, tuna canneries, and forestry; they also represent staff in provincial governments who are not covered by the public sector unions.
