Bangladesh garment workers seek justice and reforms under new interim government

Following unrest and political changes in Bangladesh with the establishment of a new interim government, garment workers and their unions continue to press for justice and improved working conditions. The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) and the National Shop Employee Federation (NSEF) report significant losses during the recent unrest, including 13 members killed, over 100 injured, and more than 200 arrested. These figures underscore the serious risks faced by workers advocating for their rights.

IndustriALL affiliates in Bangladesh are supporting the interim government while presenting a list of crucial demands. They’re calling for thorough investigations into the deaths that occurred during protests, fair trials for those responsible, and appropriate compensation for the victims’ families. The unions are also pushing for practical improvements, including the reopening of factories, payment of back wages, withdrawal of legal cases against workers involved in minimum wage protests, and the implementation of a living wage adjusted for inflation

UnionAID supports democratic, worker-led organisations that help empower working people to improve their work and livelihoods through collective action.
