BIEN Stands up for call centre workers’ safety
Despite a total lockdown in major cities like Manila the government has allowed call centres in the Philippines to continue to operate and workers face a dire choice: no work, no pay.
Without transport running workers at major companies have been expected to sleep on the office floor, even more worrying are reports received by our partners BIEN that some workers were still been required to share headsets, risking spreading the virus.
BIEN has garnered significant media attention, highlighting the unnecessary risks for call centre workers in the Philippines where COVID-19 cases number in the thousands, including the death of at least one call centre worker. BIEN’s president Mylene Cabalona said “it is enraging that in the midst of a crisis, our co-workers in the BPO industry are left with dire choices. It is actually a no-choice situation because we just need to survive.”
BIEN’s fierce advocacy has already resulted in three major call centre companies shifting to work from home arrangements.
