Call centre workers stand up
Over the last year our partner organisation, BIEN, has been working hard organising and advocating for call centre workers in the Philippines. They have provided hundreds of these workers with training in labour rights, taken up 400 cases of unfair dismissals and had nearly 1,000 call centre workers join their movement.
In December a mall fire in Davao City tragically killed 37 call centre workers. In response to this tragedy BIEN has been at the forefront of advocacy for improved health and safety laws in the Philippines. While this campaign has resulted in some positive law changes, improving enforcement of health and safety remains a huge challenge for workers.
UnionAID, along with the Communication Workers of America is funding BIEN’s organising and advocacy work for a further two years. They have ambitious goals to establish unions in some of the biggest companies like Uber, JP Morgan Chase and ANZ, so that call centre workers get the decent wages and the job security they deserve.
