MYLP Alumni Making his Mark
Few people in Myanmar – including politicians – have a good understanding about governance and the role of MPs in the fledgling democracy. However this is slowly changing thanks to one alumni from the MYLP. After an internship at Porirua City Council, Thura Zaw developed an ambitious pilot, funded by UnionAID, giving training on good governance in 2017 to local politicians and community leaders in Rakhine state. This was followed by a town hall meeting where 120 members of the public identified their priorities for action from which the local government developed a two year work plan (see photo).
This project also triggered interest at state level and Thura was invited to talk about local government to over 60 municipal committee members, state level municipal department officers and the Rakhine Minister.
