Moderate monsoon benefits Bago farmers
Unlike last year, the rainy season in Myanmar this year did not bring flooding to the Bago region where our farmers’ training centre is based. Instead a moderate monsoon has led to good crops of beans and rice, as well as a first flowering of the wonder health food sacha inchi. It also meant further work could be done on the training centre with several buildings now completed including the main training room that is also used as a classroom for local school children.
Several training courses in organic fertilisers and animal husbandry have helped improve villagers’ personal gardens but the aim of developing new crops and products for markets remains a big challenge. Local villagers were interested in drying, packaging and selling mangos in a small scale cooperative effort, while the sacha inchi offers a longer term opportunity to lift incomes and livelihoods for farmers.
