New Philippines Project Underway
Even as the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) or call centre industry in the Philippines continues to grow, wages and conditions for their workers have been deteriorating, according to the BPO Industry Employees Network (BIEN). In 2015, with over 1.2 million employees, BPO industry revenues in the country totalled $US22 billion. In spite of this boom, wages are not only lower but benefits and incentives have also been reduced and employment is more precarious. It is also a very repressive environment in which to organise and join unions.
BIEN has appointed six organisers to build the union and mobilise BPO workers in a new project funded by UnionAID, which will include workers’ education, a paralegal service, leaders and campaign training, research and public information. Thanks to First Union who helped facilitate UnionAID’s partnership with BEIN and contributed towards the project.
