Green Light for Indonesia Young Leaders Programme

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern with Indonesian President Joko Widodo
Small scale interventions at civil society level through “catalytic individuals and organisations” are recommended by Project 2049 for foreign
donors to build country capacity in Myanmar. The Myanmar Young Leaders Programme (MYLP), now in its eighth year, has demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach and now UnionAID has been funded by MFAT to establish a similar programme for East Indonesia.
The programme was announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in March. The first intake of young leaders will arrive in June this year for the 6 month programme which will be run in partnership with AUT University in Auckland
Meetings during the scoping visit to Indonesia confirmed strong support for this programme which will provide eight to ten community workers and union leaders with the knowledge and skills to address some of the key development challenges faced there. The six month programme will have a focus on practical skills such as sustainable local development, including models for good governance, ecotourism, social enterprise, fisheries management, environmental protection, and conflict resolution.
