Domestic workers fix pay rates
After joining the new domestic women’s union in Madurai, 110 women not only learnt how to use modern kitchen appliances, but gained the confidence to fix pay rates for household tasks. Their daily income leapt from Rs 80 ($1.70) to Rs 200 ($4.30). Similar successes have also been achieved by over 600 men and women who established four cooperatives in the Madurai slums and hill country around Tamil Nadu: street vendors, women tailors, forest produce collectors and rag pickers. Survey results show incomes have doubled, savings increased and household debt has reduced.
This three year UnionAID project has also funded a range of trainings provided by our local partner, the Tamil Nadu Labour Union. Cooperative members have learnt how to elect a Board, governance and management, and the effective marketing of goods and produce. These skills and the confidence they bring have enabled them to eliminate the middle man.
